CNN —Tiger Woods’ 15-year-old son, Charlie Woods, will compete in a pre-qualifier event Thursday in hopes of making the field for his first PGA Tour start next week. To qualify for the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic, Charlie would need to advance from the pre-qualifier and then again from the event’s qualifier Monday. The PGA Tour said just four qualifiers will advance from Monday’s event into the Cognizant Classic field. Aside from winning a state championship, Woods and his legendary father have played together at the PGA Tour’s annual PNC Championship tournament. “I am proud of whatever direction he chooses.”CNN has reached out to Tiger Woods for comment.

CNN —Tiger Woods shot a one-over-par 72 on his return to competitive PGA Tour action on Thursday at the Genesis Invitational, but finished his round with a huge shank to blot his outing. However, Woods admitted afterwards that he was dealing with back spasms for the final three holes of his round, something which helped to contribute to the shank on the 18th hole. Woods hits from a bunker on the 10th hole during the first round of the Genesis Invitational. Woods is chasing his first PGA Tour win since his record-equaling 82nd triumph at the Zozo Championship in October 2019. Woods has said he is aiming to play in one tournament a month this year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour and lasted only 24 holes, withdrawing Friday at the Genesis Invitational after hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole. PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek said on the telecast that Woods had an illness, and that it was not related to his ankle or back. Wood was 1-over par for the round and projected just outside the cut when he asked for a cart and was driven off the course by a rules official. Woods had not played an official event since the Masters last April, withdrawing in the middle of the third round of the rain-delayed major. Woods had said he hoped to play one tournament a month through the major season.

Woods said his back began to spasm over the final few holes in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. The shot called for the same club he had just shanked — 8-iron — for a low punch between the trees. “I had a small window there and tried to hit a punch-hook 8-iron after I just shanked an 8-iron," he said. Woods managed five birdies on a pristine day at Riviera, with mostly sunshine and a strong breeze late in the afternoon. A shank is rare, especially for Woods, but it has been a while since he mentioned back spasms.

Woods, chasing his first PGA Tour win since his record-equaling 82nd triumph at the Zozo Championship in October 2019, said he was “excited” to compete in an Instagram post announcing his participation on Wednesday. Woods celebrates his most recent PGA Tour victory at the 2019 Zozo Championship in Inzai, Japan. This time, Tiger Woods played caddie to his son Charlie as the 14-year-old shot the best round of his fledgling career to win his age group’s regional qualifier for the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championships. “It’s hard to think, ‘You’re tied for the lead, you have to go shoot a low round to win this thing,’” the 14-year-old Woods told tournament organizers. Focus up, this is what we’re gonna do.’”Woods helps his son decide his next shot during the tournament. The 47-year-old Woods was also on bag duty at last year’s regional qualifier, held at the same venue, where a then-career-best 68 round saw his son finish tied-fourth.

He competed in the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, in December despite developing plantar fasciitis earlier in the month. "Misses, angles, wind - these are all things that have come second nature to a lot of these guys - I haven't really done this in a while," said the 15-times major winner on Thursday. "I was trying to calm myself down all day, trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing out here because I haven't played."
